The Hydrogen car, I feel is going to be the car of the future (well until something new comes along). You may ask yourself “why not the electric car”. My answer to that is to read my post about electric cars. Hydrogen cars have no emissions what so ever, except for water vapor. I think water vapor is a lot better than the Nitrous Oxide that biofuels release into the air and the little carbon emissions biofuel cars have. The other thing is that Hydrogen cars have a faster pick up compared to gasoline and biofuel vehicles. Just like the electric car it has a lot of torque making better acceleration. Now some people say they’ll look too weird to buy them but really some of them will look exactly the same and some will look a little more futuristic. Having conversations with some of my friends I have noticed that the question that comes to everyones mind is that they will be too expensive for everyone. Well GM is working to make their hydrogen cars affordable so that they can sell them once they come out. They are also working with other organizations to help make the hydrogen car more affordable. When hybrid cars came out they cost more than a standard car would, but if you look at it hybrids have TWO engines and a whole lot of batteries in them. The Hydrogen car only has one engine and some tanks to store the hydrogen and a converter to turn the hydrogen into fuel cells to power the electric motor. GM has already make a hydrogen car with the same body of a Chevy Equinox. GM has made a great design for their hydrogen vehicles that will allow the motor to sit lower in the car allowing them to put everything that used to be in the dash into the hood of the vehicle. This makes the dashboard a lot smaller giving you a lot more space to store things in the glove compartment and more space for your feet. So my main reasons why the Hydrogen car is the best car for the environment are: no emissions except for water, more acceleration, go the same miles a gasoline car could on a full tank of gas, and help fix global warming. But do not get me wrong, we’ll have to do one more thing to fix global warming and that…
…will be in my next post.
This is what GM plans to release around 2010 maybe sooner or later:

This is what GM plans to release later on:

The hydrogen car can be the car of the future, if we can overcome how to produce hydrogen economically. Ignoring the infrastructure issues.
The biggest problem with hydrogen is the energy required to generate the hydrogen in the first place.
You should ecamine the full cycle of energy from “well to wheel”. Under current technology, despite their drawbacks electric cars are the most efficient when you consider the energy consumption from well to wheel.
Tesla Motors have done an interesting whit paper on this concept and it is located here.

I have no affiliation with Tesla, I’m just a fan.

You know I can’t believe I over looked that, but I’ll read that paper from Tesla and I’ll make sure I research on how to produce the Hydrogen.
But still I am concerned on how much coal burning it will take to power everyones electric car.
Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts!

Contrary to popular belief the power to charge many electric cars will simply use the evercapacity most power stations have overnight when normal demand is at it’s lowest.
Secondly the nice thing about an electric car is the ability of the car owner to produce their own fuel with solar panels on their roof. It may also be what frightens oil companies the most.
Finally a number of companies are working on Vehicle to grid technology where the capacity of the batteries of many parked electric cars could be used to balance peaks in power demand.
You’re right no one really knows what the affect of millions of electric cars will have on the power grid but good management will minimise the risks.

Yea see I love the electric car but i have two reasons why I don’t like it yet.
Uses electricity that comes from coal burning (a little over 60% of the United States Electricity comes from coal burning)
and the ones I have seen only go about 50miles on one charge. The Tesla Motors company you showed me has their vehicle at 220miles per charge which is AWESOME… But its starting at around $100,000, i know a majority of Americans won’t be able to afford that.
But yes if they can fix these problems I’ll definitely root for electric cars.
